You’re Hearing Rumors? They’re Probably True.

Yes it’s true.  We are moving our family to Thailand hopefully by the end of 2014.  Many are wondering why we would do something so crazy.  We are quitting our jobs, selling our house(s), our vehicles, and most of what we own.  We will pack a few bags, get on a plane and fly halfway around the world into the Great Unknown.  We are excited beyond words, sad beyond measure, and many things in between.  But this opportunity presented itself and we said yes.  So here we go.

I’ll try to answer your questions.  If you have more, leave them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer.

What will we be doing?  We don’t know.  The first year is focused on learning Thai and acclimating to the culture.  After we’ve been there for some time we’ll have a better idea of what we’ll be doing on a day to day basis.  Teaching English, running a small business or teaching in a university have all been thrown around as possibilities, but we simply don’t know yet.

How long will we be there?  We don’t know that either.  We’ve committed to three years.  My brain can’t think further than that right now.

How are the girls responding?  They are on board.  In fact, they are really excited.  They are dealing with the same spectrum of emotions as we are.  They are deeply sad about leaving friends, cousins, and grandparents.  But they recognize that this is a unique opportunity so they are embracing the adventure of it all and are truly excited about what the future holds.  We are proud of how they are trusting us and God for what they do not know.

What about the church?  We are searching for a new pastor and trusting that God will bring someone to take our place.  Our church has been a beautiful community for us over the last 10 years and our hearts are breaking as we think about saying good-bye.  But, the time has come to move on, so we’re moving on.

What about the dog?  What about him?  Just kidding.  We are looking for a loving home for Hudson.  If you are interested in a sweet, kid friendly, fully trained dog who really loves peanut butter, let us  know.

Life is full of twists and turns, isn’t it?  This is a big twist for us, but one we’ve been anticipating for a long time.  When we were dating (nearly 20 years ago!!), Conrad asked me if I would ever consider living in Thailand because he felt like that was in his future at some point.  I said no.  Then I almost broke up with him because I wanted nothing to do with leaving the Midwest.  The journey from that point to this has been long, but there is no question in my mind that this is what is right for us for this season of our life and ministry.

I have much more to write, but this is getting lengthy.  The story of this journey will unfold as I process my thoughts here on this new little blog.  My sister will also be contributing to this blog.  She will offer her perspective on watching a loved one move far away.  This is emotionally grueling for both of us and we were looking for a place to process our thoughts and emotions, so here it is.  Welcome to our little corner of the Internet.  We hope you’ll visit often.
